Uniquely The Same

Regardless of the demographics of the audience that I would be serving I knew that from the job description and interview that the position as a Super Kids Camp Counselor was what I desired. My preconceived notion about Baltimore City youth was that they were simply like any other group of children within this nation; they would only be living in a location that I wasn't quite familiar with. From previous experiences with working with children I knew that they all required time, guidance and motivation if they are going to be successful. I feel the need to provide all of those to as many children as possible while I'm here.

My views were correct. They all have a fear of cooties. They all watch the Disney Channel and Cartoon Network. Every girl wants to play "Miss Mary Mack" on the bus or in the cafeteria. The child with the Cheetos or Fruit Loops is coolest one of them all, if he shares... Every child that I have come encounter with throughout the duration of this internship has either reminded me of a child I previously knew or myself when I was younger.

As a SuperKids Camp Counselor, every day I have grown to realize more and more that they really aren't any different than other children outside of this city. I believe that all youth that aren't forgotten are capable of greater things than I can begin to imagine.

  1. Ashley- wonderful response. Our campers, just like any other kids, are capable of great things.
