The Work Of My Life

“But it’s also created a greater sense of urgency around the task of designing our own lives to tap into our own specific ideals, talents, and resources—to find ways of not just working to live, but finding the work of our lives.” page xx

I am very passionate about pursing a line of work that brings me to life everyday. I want to wake up in the morning and feel like I have a mission and purpose to fulfill. I want to be able to utilize my strengths and talents, while also being challenged in areas that I need growth in.

This passage resonates with me because I personally feel I have a calling. There is a sense of urgency I have to continue on in this calling because I know it will be beneficial to the people around me. When I think about my calling, it gets me excited. It is suited so perfectly for me. All of my strengths and talents are wrapped up into one.

With this excitement is also fear. At times I feel this calling is too big for me to tackle. It seems impossible. There is a quote however that comes to mind when I have these thoughts: If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough. It’s a good thing to be taken out of your comfort zone because outside of it is where life begins.

This relates to me as a SuperKids counselor because through various experiences, you learn what your strengths and weakness are. You figure out what your passion is and what you want to do with your life. For the past several months I have been thinking about going into teaching. This came about because I would think about how my learning style always tends to conflict from the teacher’s teaching style. Asking for help from my professors often time left me feeling like a burden to them. This led me to want to try being a teacher and I figured SuperKids Camp would be the perfect opportunity to get my feet wet. I am seeing now that my passion rests more in instilling self-esteem and confidence into people. My passion is helping people see that they are important and their voice matters, and not necessarily standing in front of the class as a teacher.

Though being a teacher may not be a career I pursue fulltime upon graduation, I can use this as a platform to help these kids see their self worth. I am able to express my patience to them as they sometimes struggle through reading of learning how to blend sounds. I am able to express my kindness to them by listening to their stories—though often long winded—about their favorite tennis shoes or what foods they don’t like.

I look forward to the challenge that I am presented with everyday when I walk into my classroom. I look forward to discovering new ways to engage my class. I look forward to being able to say at least one encouraging thing in our small, one-on-one conversation as I sign their 100 Book Challenge sheet. I look forward to seeing their faces light up when I tell them I am excited that they are in my class.

It’s a great thing to be able to use my strengths and live out my passion everyday.
