Beyond Expectations

Having been a kid who grew up in Baltimore City, I had a few ideas about what to expect from the campers this summer. But I also was not set on the idea that the campers had to fit a certain mold. I was expecting any and every type of personality to walk through those doors. One thing I knew for sure was that every camper would be handfuls in their own way.

Right at the end of Day 1, I realized that I was most definitely right about campers being a handful, but I did not anticipate how much of a handful they'd be. Our personalities are not hidden at all when we are children. The personalities and children themselves are unapologetically present. As the weeks have passed I have had to find ways to accommodate all of the presence that enters camp. It's been a very trying learning experience. I wish I could explain myself further, but my vocabulary is not extensive enough to convey what I have witnessed and experienced by being in a room with these campers from Baltimore City. I can only imagine how the teachers of these students feel during the school year. So much personality, so much time! Teachers really are superheroes!

  1. Tyasia- you are a superhero this summer! I like how you said that children are 'unapologetically present', I think that was very insightful.
